Speakboth
Privacy Policy
What the Speakboth app and this website process, why, where, for how long and what you can do about it.

Who we are
Speakboth is an iPhone app made by ODBS LLC (“we”, “us”), a company organised in Wyoming, United States. This policy covers the Speakboth app, its server and this website. ODBS LLC is the data controller responsible for the processing described here. You can reach us at info@odbs.tech.
What Speakboth does
Speakboth translates text that you type or paste, and text your iPhone reads with the camera or in a photo, with AI provided by third parties. It also lets two people talk face to face: what each person says is translated and spoken aloud. It can explain a translation with notes written by AI, read translations aloud with your iPhone’s voices and, on iOS 18 or later, translate text on your iPhone without a connection. It shows no ads, contains no analytics or tracking tools, and we never sell your data.
Your account
When you first open Speakboth, the app creates an account for you automatically, without a name, an email address or a password. For it we store a random account ID, a random installation ID, the platform, the app version, the app’s language, your time zone (used to know when your day starts, for the daily allowance) and when the account was created and last used.
Your text and translations
When you translate text online, the app sends your text, the languages you chose and the tone to our server, which forwards them to OpenAI to translate them. If you let Speakboth detect the language, OpenAI also recognises the language you wrote in. We do not send your name, your account ID or your IP address to OpenAI. Online translation, camera translation, notes and conversations are only possible after you agree to this in the app; the full consent text is the AI processing consent on this website.
Your text and the translation are not stored: not in our database and not in our logs. For each request (a translation, the lines of a photo or notes) we keep a technical record: the time, the languages, the tone if there is one, the number of characters, the AI model, the cost and whether it succeeded, together with a one-way cryptographic fingerprint of the request, which our server uses to recognise a request that is sent again. The fingerprint does not contain your text.
Camera and photos
When you translate with the camera, your iPhone itself recognises the text in the camera image or in a photo you take or choose, with Apple’s on-device text recognition. The app sends only the recognised lines of text and the languages to our server, which forwards them to OpenAI to translate them, just like typed text. The photo and the camera image never leave your iPhone: Speakboth holds them only in memory and does not save or upload them.
Speakboth asks for camera access the first time you use its camera; you can turn it off at any time in your iPhone’s Settings and still choose a photo. Photos are chosen with Apple’s photo picker, so Speakboth has no access to your photo library and receives only the photo you choose.
Notes on a translation
When you ask for the meaning, examples and synonyms of a translation, the app sends the original text, the translation, their languages and the app’s language, in which the notes are written, to our server, which forwards them to OpenAI. The notes are written by AI and can contain mistakes. Neither your text nor the notes are stored, just like translations.
Offline translation and read aloud, on your iPhone
On iOS 18 or later you can download languages and translate text on your iPhone without a connection, with Apple’s Translation framework. The languages are downloaded from Apple and managed in your iPhone’s Settings. Text translated this way is not sent to us or to OpenAI; the app shows that it was translated on this iPhone.
Speakboth reads translations aloud with the voices installed on your iPhone (Apple’s speech synthesis). This happens on your iPhone; the text is not sent anywhere.
Saved translations
Your history and your favorites are stored only on your iPhone, in Speakboth’s own storage. They are not sent to our server or uploaded anywhere, and they are excluded from iCloud and computer backups, so they do not move to a new iPhone. You can delete them one by one or all at once in Saved. When you delete your account in the app, the translations saved on that iPhone are deleted too, as they are when you delete the app. They are not part of the data export, because they never reach us.
Conversations by voice
In a conversation, two people talk face to face with one iPhone on the table and speak in turn. Speakboth uses the microphone only during a conversation, and only after you allow it when iOS asks; you can turn microphone access off at any time in your iPhone’s Settings. Your iPhone detects when a person stops speaking.
While a person speaks, the audio of what they say is sent to our server, which forwards it to ElevenLabs to turn the speech into text. The text is translated by OpenAI, just like typed text, and the translation is sent to ElevenLabs to turn it into speech, which your iPhone plays. Our server does not send your name, your account ID or your IP address to ElevenLabs or OpenAI. Conversations are only possible after you agree to the AI processing consent in the app, like online translation.
We do not store what is said: no audio, transcripts or translations of conversations are kept in our database or in our logs. For each call to ElevenLabs or OpenAI we keep a technical record: the time, the languages, the duration or the number of characters, the model, the cost and whether it succeeded. We also count the conversation minutes you use each week, for your plan’s weekly allowance. Conversation minutes are part of Speakboth Premium.
Your age
Speakboth is for adults. Before your first translation the app asks once for your birth month and year. We store only the month and year, to check that you are 18 or older; if you are not, translation is not available. The declaration cannot be changed in the app afterwards; to correct it, contact info@odbs.tech. It is deleted with your account and included in your data export.
Purchases
Speakboth Premium is sold by Apple as an auto-renewing subscription. Apple processes the payment; we never see your card details. We use RevenueCat to verify purchases and keep your Premium status in step with Apple. RevenueCat receives a pseudonymous ID of your account and the purchase information Apple provides, such as the product, the price, the currency, the storefront country and the dates. We store your plan and how many requests you used each day.
Device checks and security
To protect the service, Speakboth uses Apple App Attest, which confirms that requests come from the genuine app on a genuine Apple device. We store the key identifier and the verification data Apple provides for your installation. Our server limits how many requests an account or a network can make.
Our server uses your IP address while it handles a request. Our server logs record the IP address, the installation ID, the platform and the app version of each request, to keep the service secure and to find errors. Consent records keep only the network part of the address (such as 203.0.113.x) as proof of your choice.
Crash reports
If the app or our server fails, an error report is sent to Sentry, in its EU region, so that we can fix the error. Reports contain technical information and your pseudonymous account ID, but no IP address, no email address, no screenshots, screen recordings or photos and not the text you translate.
Our team’s access
Authorised members of our team can view account records in an internal admin console when this is needed for support, security or billing. What they can see is limited by their role, and every access is logged.
Service providers and where data is processed
We use these providers, each only for the purpose stated:
- Amazon Web Services: our server, database, data export archives and database backups in Frankfurt, Germany (EU).
- Cloudflare: network protection and delivery for our server and this website.
- OpenAI (United States): translating your text, the text recognised in your photos and the text of conversations, and writing notes, after your consent. Requests are sent with storage turned off; OpenAI may keep them for up to 30 days to detect abuse and processes them on its global infrastructure, which may be outside your country and outside the EU.
- ElevenLabs, Inc. (United States): turning what is said in conversations into text and translations into speech, after your consent. ElevenLabs processes this data as our service provider under its data processing agreement, which includes the EU Standard Contractual Clauses for transfers, and stores it in the United States. It does not use this data to train its models; we have turned model training off for our account. It may keep audio and text for as long as its data processing agreement allows, to provide its service.
- Apple: App Attest and in-app purchases.
- RevenueCat (United States): purchase verification.
- Sentry (EU region): crash and performance reports.
Where data is transferred outside the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Türkiye, we rely on the safeguards the law provides, such as the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses; for users in Türkiye, transfers abroad (including storage in Germany) are carried out under Article 9 of the KVKK.
How long we keep data
We keep data only as long as it is needed:
- Your text, the text recognised in photos, the translations and notes: not stored on our servers.
- Photos and camera images: never leave your iPhone and are not saved by Speakboth.
- What is said in conversations (the audio, the text it is turned into and the translations): not stored on our servers. ElevenLabs and OpenAI may keep it as described in the service providers section above.
- History and favorites: only on your iPhone, until you delete them, delete your account in the app or delete the app.
- Account, age declaration and plan: until you delete your account. An account that is not used for 180 days and has no active subscription is deleted automatically.
- Technical records of translations, including the request fingerprint: up to 400 days, or until you delete your account.
- Technical records of conversations (time, languages, duration or number of characters, model, cost and whether it succeeded): up to 400 days, or until you delete your account.
- Daily request counts: up to 400 days after the day they count.
- Weekly counts of conversation minutes: up to 400 days after the week they count.
- Installation records and App Attest keys that are not used: deleted after 400 days; revoked keys after 30 days.
- Purchase records: as long as we need them for accounting and tax, also after account deletion. The full notification RevenueCat sends us is deleted after 90 days.
- Server logs: kept only for a limited time and then overwritten.
- Data export archives: 7 days.
- Database backups: up to 180 days, after which deleted data is gone from them as well.
- Records of our team’s access to account data: up to two years.
- Consent records: kept as proof of your choice, also after account deletion, but without your IP address or device.
Your choices and rights
In the app you can download a copy of your data, delete your account and withdraw your AI processing consent (Settings). Deleting your account takes effect at once and cannot be undone; it also deletes the translations saved on that iPhone and does not cancel a subscription, which you manage with Apple. The data export contains the data on our servers; translations saved on your iPhone are not part of it, because they never reach us. After you withdraw your consent, nothing is sent to our AI providers, and online translation, camera translation, notes and conversations are unavailable until you agree again; offline translation on your iPhone is not affected.
Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR, the UK GDPR, Türkiye’s KVKK or US state laws), you may also have the right to access, correct, delete or port your data, to restrict or object to processing and to withdraw consent at any time. Write to info@odbs.tech; we reply within 30 days. You may also complain to your data protection authority (in Türkiye, the Personal Data Protection Authority, KVKK). We do not sell or share personal data for cross-context behavioural advertising and do not use it for profiling.
Legal bases
Where the GDPR, the UK GDPR, the KVKK or similar laws apply, we send your text, the text recognised in your photos, the translations you ask notes for and what is said in conversations to our AI providers with your consent (GDPR Article 6(1)(a)); we process account, age and subscription data to provide the app you asked for (contract); data needed to keep the service secure, prevent abuse and fix errors on the basis of our legitimate interests; and data we must keep by law to meet legal obligations. We make no automated decisions with legal or similarly significant effects about you.
Children
Speakboth is for people aged 18 or older and does not offer child accounts. If you believe a person under 18 has given us personal data, contact us and we will delete it.
This website
This website has no accounts and no forms. It sets one cookie, NEXT_LOCALE, to remember your language, and loads no analytics or advertising scripts. Cloudflare delivers the site and processes technical request data, such as your IP address, to deliver and protect it. Contact links open your email app; nothing is sent until you send it.
Changes
We update this policy when the app or our providers change, and change the date above. If a change affects what you consented to, the app asks for your consent again before it applies.
